Travel one way aboard the weekly local ferry between Sorong and Yensawai, followed by a short crossing to ipyum.

Our most sheltered option, with the shortest boat ride. The journey includes approximately six hours aboard the local ferry and 15 minutes in our covered longboat—around eight hours in total, including boarding in Sorong and the connection in Yensawai.

With most of the journey aboard the ferry and only a short, generally sheltered crossing by longboat, this option offers the best chance of staying dry throughout your transfer.

General Package Details

  • Children aged 6–11 travel for 50% of the additional adult price. Children aged 0–5 travel free.

  • Our boats accommodate up to six adults or older children, plus up to two children aged 0–5.

  • When other ipyum guests travel aboard the same boat, the boat portion of your package will be automatically divided among the paying guests. Any resulting credit or refund will be applied to your booking.

    Your personal airport service and ferry tickets are not shared and remain part of your individual package.

    Transfer times and arrangements depend on your flight schedule, ferry connections, tides, weather and sea conditions.

  • Please arrange your transfer with us at least 48 hours in advance. The earlier the better.

    Arrange Your Transfer

  • If your journey is delayed, please remember that we do not normally travel by sea after dark, except for the short Yensawai crossing included in Local Ferry + Boat. Your complete journey must therefore be reasonably expected to reach ipyum before 18:00. If this is not possible, we will arrange an overnight plan instead.

    For safety, the captain always makes the final decision about whether and when the boat can travel. If flights, ferries or weather disrupt your plans, we will remain on hand to coordinate the next steps and find the best available solution.

What to Expect

Travelling to a remote island is part of the Raja Ampat experience. Depending on whether you choose Boat Adventure, Fast Ferry + Boat or Local Ferry + Boat, your transfer will require several differnt modes of transport. When you book a complete transfer package, we coordinate each stage and assist you with each step along the way.

  • One of our drivers will welcome you outside the Sorong Airport terminal and assist with your luggage. Depending on your chosen transfer, you will travel by private car to your hotel, the ferry terminal or the departure point for our boat.

    If you choose Fast Ferry + Boat or Local Ferry + Boat, your driver will also provide your ferry tickets, bottled drinks and packaged snacks.

  • Boat Adventure takes you directly from Sorong to ipyum aboard our covered longboat, without using a public ferry or making a connection in Waisai or Yensawai.

    The journey takes approximately three hours, depending on weather and sea conditions. It is the most open-air, scenic and adventurous option, but also the most weather-dependent. Homemade ipyum snacks and drinks are provided during the journey.

  • Fast Ferry + Boat provides a more sheltered journey between Sorong and Waisai. The package includes VIP tickets, and we assist with ferry check-in, boarding, luggage and the connection to our boat in Waisai. The ferry journey itself is spent indoors in the air-conditioned VIP cabin.

  • Local Ferry + Boat offers the slowest and most sheltered route to ipyum, although the experience is more basic. We assist with boarding and luggage in Sorong and welcome you when the weekly ferry reaches Yensawai.

    During the ferry journey, you can relax in the air-conditioned VIP cabin or enjoy the open air on the upper deck. We also include access to the ship’s Wi-Fi service.

  • All three transfer options include a journey aboard one of ipyum’s covered longboats. These are open-sided boats designed for local sea travel. Their roofs provide shade and some protection from rain, while the open sides allow airflow and uninterrupted views of Raja Ampat.

    Comfortable, slimline inflatable life jackets are provided for adults, with appropriately sized children’s life jackets for our smaller guests. Our team will assist you when boarding and leaving the boat.

  • Spray, rain and changing sea conditions are part of travelling by covered longboat. Guests choosing Boat Adventure or Fast Ferry + Boat should expect that they may get wet during the journey, even though the boat has a roof.

    This is less likely with Local Ferry + Boat, as the final crossing from Yensawai to ipyum is short and generally more sheltered.

    Raja Ampat is normally warm, but wet clothing combined with the wind created by a moving boat can feel cool. We provide rain ponchos to reduce the spray and help protect you from the cool wind, but they will probably not keep you completely dry, it depends on the weather and sea state.

    Light, quick-drying clothing is the most practical choice for your transfer.

  • Your luggage will be protected from rain and sea spray and kept dry throughout the boat journey, regardless of the conditions.

    We also provide dry containers for phones, passports, wallets and other small valuables. We recommend keeping sensitive items inside these containers throughout the boat journey. Salt water can damage even water-resistant phones by corroding charging ports and other exposed components.

  • Travel Disruptions and Safety

    Boat travel in Raja Ampat depends on weather, tides and sea conditions. Conditions can change quickly, and Boat Adventure is particularly weather-dependent.

    For your comfort and safety, we may adjust the departure time, change the route or recommend Fast Ferry + Boat or Local Ferry + Boat instead.

    We do not normally travel by sea after dark, except for the short crossing from Yensawai included in Local Ferry + Boat. Before departure, your journey must therefore be reasonably expected to reach ipyum by 18:00.

    The captain always makes the final decision about whether, when and by which route the boat can travel. If the captain determines that the journey cannot be completed safely or before 18:00, we will help arrange an overnight plan in Sorong or Waisai.

    When an overnight stay or other disruption results from weather, sea conditions, flight or ferry delays, late arrival, or other circumstances outside ipyum’s control, the cost of accommodation, meals and related expenses remains the guest’s responsibility.

    If your plans are disrupted, we will remain on hand to coordinate the next steps and find the best available solution.

Sorong Overnight Add-on

Arriving later in the day may require an overnight stay in Sorong before continuing to ipyum. Similarly, if your departing flight leaves Sorong before 10:00, you may need to travel from ipyum the previous day and stay overnight in Sorong.

An overnight stay may also become necessary unexpectedly if a flight or ferry is delayed or cancelled, or if weather or sea conditions prevent safe onward travel. In these circumstances, we will remain on hand to help arrange accommodation and coordinate the next stage of your journey, costs in these cases remain the guest’s responsibility.

We are developing optional Sorong overnight packages combining accommodation, breakfast, ground transport and complete coordination of your onward journey.

We expect to publish the complete options and prices by the end of August 2026.

Flying to Raja Ampat

Choosing your flights

  • In 2026, we generally fly with Etihad Airways from a major European airport to Jakarta (CGK) via Abu Dhabi. We have found it reliable, comfortable and reasonably priced, with modern aircraft. Depending on schedules and fares, other full-service airlines connecting through the Middle East—such as Qatar Airways or Turkish Airlines—can also be good options.

    We typically arrive in Jakarta during the afternoon or evening and connect to a Garuda Indonesia overnight flight to Sorong (SOQ), departing shortly after midnight. You effectively lose a day—and some sleep—on the outbound journey. Travelling west on your return, however, you regain the time difference and can often arrive home on the same calendar day.

  • Most international guests travel to Sorong via Jakarta (CGK). However, travellers from Australia or New Zealand may find it more convenient to enter Indonesia through Bali (DPS), avoiding the need to fly west to Jakarta before travelling east again to Sorong.

  • From within Indonesia, travellers can also connect to Sorong via domestic hubs such as Makassar, Manado and Ambon in addition to Jakarta and Denpasar (Bali).

  • A. Overnight flights from Jakarta

    Take particular care when booking your Garuda Indonesia flight from Jakarta (CGK) to Sorong (SOQ). The flight departs shortly after midnight, which can easily cause confusion when selecting the travel date.

    For example, if you arrive in Jakarta on Monday evening, a flight departing shortly after midnight will be dated Tuesday. Booking this flight for the wrong date is a common mistake, so check your itinerary carefully before confirming it.

    B. Arrival and departure times in Sorong

    If you arrive in Sorong after 13:00, you may need to stay overnight before continuing to ipyum, depending on the transfer option you choose.

    If your return flight departs Sorong before 10:00, even Boat adventure our direct boat transfer to Sorong from ipyum cannot get you to the airport in time. You will need to travel to Sorong the previous day and stay overnight.

    These times are provided as general planning guidance only and do not guarantee that a connection can be made. In some circumstances, they represent the minimum time required and leave little margin for delays, weather or changing sea conditions. Guests remain responsible for confirming their itineraries and allowing sufficient time between each stage of their journey.

Travel Tips

  • Sorong (SOQ) is the main gateway to Raja Ampat.

    Most international guests travel via Jakarta (CGK), which offers the widest and generally most reliable choice of connections to Sorong.

    There are also direct domestic flights from Bali (DPS) to Sorong.

  • For domestic connections, we recommend avoiding Lion Air, Batik Air, Sriwijaya Air and TransNusa, as delays are common and their websites can be unreliable. Garuda Indonesia is not perfect, but it is usually the more dependable option.

    Garuda also operates from the modern Terminal 3 at Jakarta Airport, which can make connections easier if your international flight arrives at the same terminal. Always check the terminals shown on your tickets, as not every international airline uses Terminal 3.

    Book international and domestic flights separately

    We normally book our international and domestic flights separately. This can reduce costs and provide greater flexibility.

    If you do the same, check the dates and times very carefully and allow plenty of time for your connection in Jakarta. Immigration, baggage collection and customs can easily take an hour, while domestic check-in usually closes one hour before departure. We recommend allowing at least three hours between flights—and preferably longer, as separate tickets offer no protection if your first flight is delayed.

    Be especially careful with the travel dates. Many flights to Sorong depart shortly after midnight, making it easy to book the wrong date by mistake
