ipyum is a word from the Biak language. It means good, beautiful or better—not only describing something that is already good, but also expressing the idea of becoming better.

The name was discovered almost by chance. While searching through a Biak dictionary, co-owner Carl was looking for a company name that would be short, distinctive and carry the right meaning. ipyum just kind of popped out. He shared the idea with the team and was surprised to learn that they also thought it was exactly right. Somehow, the right name had been found on the first attempt—a fortunate stroke of luck.

The meaning of ipyum has since become part of our ethos:

Create beautiful things. Always try to do better. Be good.

For us, ipyum is more than a name. It describes both what we hope to create and how we intend to create it: something beautiful, made with care, while continually learning and becoming better.

The swirl in the ipyum logo is inspired by the white chalk patterns traditionally painted on Papuan skin for festivals and celebrations. It represents something distinctive and authentic from the local culture. Its flowing form also recalls rolling waves and seashells—natural shapes that may themselves have inspired some of these traditional patterns.

In mid 2023, co-owners Carl and Komaria set out to create a business that would carry them into retirement—not as a quiet pastime, but as something engaging and challenging that could provide an income, keep them active and give them a shared sense of purpose.

Their search began in Bali. But Bali had changed dramatically. The collapse in tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic had been followed by an equally dramatic recovery, accelerated by an influx of wealthy Russians following the invasion of Ukraine. Prices for land and commercial property had climbed beyond anything that made sense for the kind of business Carl and Komaria hoped to create.

So they began looking farther afield.

They travelled through Sumba and Alor and came close to opening a café in Alor. But Raja Ampat kept appearing in their research and conversations, so Carl suggested that they go and explore it for themselves.

Komaria was privately dreading the journey. Like many people from Java who have never visited Papua, she imagined Raja Ampat as a remote and potentially dangerous wilderness. Nevertheless, she agreed to support Carl’s latest exploratory plan—and was pleasantly surprised by what they found.

Sorong did not immediately reveal the magic. But once they crossed the water and reached the islands, they quickly understood why people spoke about Raja Ampat with such enthusiasm.

While staying at a local homestay, they enjoyed the experience but could not escape the feeling that it could be made much more comfortable, thoughtful and connected to nature. There seemed to be space for a different kind of stay: one that preserved the authenticity of Raja Ampat while paying greater attention to design, food, comfort, sustainability and the overall guest experience.

They mentioned their idea of creating a small beach retreat to one of the construction workers at the homestay. That chance conversation eventually led them to Batanta Island and the village of Yensawai.

They viewed only two possible locations. One was the clear choice: a beautiful, almost private bay surrounded by forest, reef and sea.

That place is now ipyum Bay.

Today, Carl and Komaria are building ipyum in partnership with people from Yensawai and the surrounding area. The ambition is not simply to build a resort, but to find a lasting balance: creating meaningful work and better economic opportunities while protecting the ecology and natural character that made this place so compelling in the first place.

ipyum was built over three years and financed primarily through co-owner Carl’s consulting work in Europe.

While Carl continued working abroad, Komaria lived at ipyum and managed the project on the ground. This meant spending long periods apart—an arrangement that required considerable sacrifice from both of them. Daily video calls and visits approximately every three months helped them stay connected and make the many decisions required to keep the project moving.

Building in such a remote location brought significant financial, logistical and regulatory challenges. Materials and equipment had to travel long distances, skilled workers were difficult to find, and even apparently simple tasks could become complicated. There were many moments when the scale of the project seemed overwhelming and its future uncertain.

Nevertheless, Carl, Komaria and the ipyum team continued working through each challenge as it arose. After three long years, what began as an ambitious idea in a nearly private bay had become a real place—created through persistence, cooperation and a shared belief that it was worth finishing.
